I find it strange, however, since this story takes place in the late 19th century, when morphine combined with alcohol laudaum - had been commonly used as pain killer for 300 hundred years. And at the time this movie takes place heroin was being introduced to the medical community. It seems kind of unrealistic for Bergman to expect us to believe that Agness doctor, unless he was exceptionally cruel, would not have used these drugs to relieve her pain.
