Frank Abagnale Jr. had a fascinating life for a while there. A born scam artist, he left home in 1964, at the age of 16, and began a criminal odyssey that took him all over the world. During the next five years he posed as an airline pilot, a pediatrician, and a lawyer, among other things, while passing a couple million dollars' worth of bad checks. Abagnale told the story in a 1980 book that got turned into a tense 2002 movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Then playwright Terence McNally and composer Marc Shaiman gave the world a musical stage version. On the evidence of this touring production, I'd say that was one adaptation too many. The fascination is definitely gone. In its place: a 60s-pop-pastiche score full of songs that could be plugged into any of a hundred musicals, a poorly conceived script that oversimplifies its subject, bad design, and choreography that comes across as an excuse to indulge in some swingin' period sexism. —Tony Adler
