Cat and Mouse

Hong Kong heartthrob Andy Lau stars in this glossy costume comedy about “Imperial Cat,” an 11th-century swordsman who protects the wise Judge Bao (Anthony Wong) from potential enemies, including “Shining Mouse,” a Robin Hood-like trickster (Cecilia Cheung). Adapted from a popular series of novels featuring the judge, this adds a gender twist and a romantic subplot by making the mouse a woman (though Cheung sports an obviously fake mustache for half the movie). Lau and Cheung banter capably as they join forces to foil an assassination plot against the judge, and the northern China locations are striking, but these charms hardly overcome Gordon Chan's predictable direction and a script that aims for cheap laughs. In Cantonese with subtitles. 100 min.
