Casket Girls, Stargazer Lillies, Dreamend

When: Mon., Feb. 24, 9 p.m. 2014
Casket Girls, whose core members are sisters Phaedra and Elsa Greene and Ryan Graveface (of Dreamend, Black Moth Super Rainbow, and Graveface Records), not only list “David Lynch” as their sole influence on Facebook but also spread an origin story wherein Graveface serendipitously discovered the sisters sitting beneath a tree in a public square in their mutual hometown of Savannah, Georgia, playing Autoharp and singing. Maybe telling strangers’ fortunes too? The band’s “About” page certainly seems to want to make the sisters seem eerie, and Graveface’s characterically dark backing tracks, with their weird squealing and gurgling, pull pretty hard in that direction too. But at heart the new True Love Kills the Fairy Tale is an indie-pop album—the Greenes’ chill, layered vocals and delicate, entrancing melodies could carry the songs all by themselves. “Ashes and Embers,” with the sweeping almost-bounce of its vocal hook, could’ve been a Top 40 hit from the 90s with a choreographed video if it’d been given a different beat. After a few listens, the sisters’ airy singing seems to spread out across all the songs, so that the album blends into itself like an ouroboros—but I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. —Kevin Warwick The Stargazer Lilies and Dreamend open.
