Carnitas Don Rafa serves up hot-table-type Mexican food stunningly deficient in taste and appearance. We started with barbacoa, quite surprisingly presented not in tender threads but in thick, tough slabs slathered in a thin red barbecue-type sauce. It was hard to believe that the dessicated, drab carnitas were prepared in the traditional slow technique of simmering in their own fat. Hoping to find something to activate my taste buds, I sampled a vegetarian burrito, low in flavor and high in calories. Carnitas Don Rafa doesnt make their own tortillas, the refried beans seemed like they might have arrived at the restaurant in industrial drums, the rice was lifeless, and the flan was presented in an aluminum tin. Overall, an unsatisfactory eating experience; still, the rooms are well lit, the washrooms clean, and the servers quite personable.
