Caribbean Festival

When: Aug. 7-9, 12 p.m. 2009
Phone: 312-427-0266 or 312-559-1212
The sixth annual Caribbean Festival presents reggae, calypso, gospel, R & B, hip-hop, reggaeton, and more this Friday through Sunday in Union Park. Though the lineups include quite a few local artists and regular Chicago visitors, each night wraps up with a high-powered out-of-town headliner or three: Friday it’s Kingston reggae duo Tanto Metro & Devonte and New York “reggae-soul” band Leon & the Peoples (led by Leon Robinson, who starred in Disney’s Cool Runnings), Saturday it’s the legendary Beres Hammond and Jamaican roots-reggae band Culture (featuring Kenyatta Hill and Lenya Wilks), and Sunday it’s more reggae with Tarrus Riley, who’s joined by Duane Stephenson, saxophonist Dean Fraser, and special guest Bar-Bee. Music begins at noon each day, and Friday at 1:45 PM the festival plays host to the finals of the Chi-Town Idol contest. There will be food, drink, and arts and crafts for sale throughout the weekend. Adult admission is $10 till 5 PM and $15 thereafter; kids under 12 and seniors over 70 are $5; children six and under are free. VIP tickets are $50 per day or $100 for the weekend. —Kevin Warwick
