Neither Marlon Brando (as a Lower East Side guru) nor Walter Matthau, nor the deliciously sick episode with James Coburn as the surgeon Dr. Krankheit (giving the assembled onlookers in the operating theater the finger), nor Richard Burton's Dylan Thomas parody, nor John Astin, nor a frightened-looking Ringo Starr, nor the nubile freshness of Ewa Aulin in the title role can salvage this shambles (1968), adapted by Buck Henry from Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg's halfway original retelling of Candide. Christian Marquand directed this colossal mishmash. 115 min.
