Califone, Grandkids

When: Thu., May 1, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $18
On last year’s Stitches (Dead Oceans) and its attendant tours, Califone went full circle, returning to its beginnings as a collective composed of singer and multi-instrumentalist Tim Rutili and whatever musicians he’s working with at the moment. In Califone’s early years, when Rutili lived in Chicago, you could often see the band improvise along to old or experimental films, devising soundtracks by turns eerie and gleefully chaotic. Tonight, as part of the Chicago International Movies & Music Festival, Rutili will lead a four-piece version of the band that includes guitarist Craig Ross (from Lenny Kravitz’s band) and percussionists Brian Deck and Ben Massarella (both recurrent members of Califone and its predecessor, Red Red Meat); they’ll accompany a rare screening of Pat O’Neil’s 1989 film Water and Power, a richly layered meditation on the relationship between time, the elements, and the city of Los Angeles. —Bill Meyer
