For her new exhibition, "Feather-stitch," Dani Leventhal has an unusual collaborator: her cat. At 1:30 each day for the run of the exhibit, which opens Tuesday, August 26, Leventhal will meticulously dissect one of 22 songbirds killed by her cat over the last year and preserved in the artist's freezer. "It's a process that's done with meaning," she says. "I'm trying to extend the life of this bird, because I feel sort of responsible for this premature death that's happened." The multimedia installation, whose name is taken from an embroidery stitch in which stitches alternate to the left and right of center, also includes 15 oil-graphite-and-photo collages; a platform made of rammed earth; and an outdoor garden full of phallic vegetables: carrots, corn, jalapenos, and cucumbers ("the squash didn't make it," says Leventhal). There'll be a free opening reception Wednesday, August 27, from 4 to 7 PM at Gallery 400, 1240 W. Harrison, and a cookout and film screening when the show closes September 6.
