Jon-Antony Sinclair began stitching bits of food together to make fashion several years ago, but he found that certain ideas didn't translate well to the runway. In an early exhibition of his edible designs, the licorice slacks he created for a groom's wedding outfit kept falling apart. So Sinclair sent the bride out solo in her meringue wedding dress--carrying a Styrofoam head adorned with the groom's toffee hat. "People loved it," he says. Trained as a chef in his native Australia, Sinclair began creating cuisine for the catwalk while working at a restaurant in London about three years ago. Now the manager for Lakeview caterers the Hearty Boys, Sinclair has re-created the wedding dress for Fashion Bites!, a show of his designs that will benefit the Hearts Foundation, an organization that raises funds for HIV/AIDS service providers. Other outfits taking shape in Sinclair's apartment over the last couple of weeks include a ball gown made of muffins and scones, a corn-husk suit, and a bra and skirt made of bananas. But don't expect to see these creations on the menu--at this point they wouldn't taste too good. Says Sinclair, "Polyurethane is my best friend." Fashion Bites! is Tuesday, June 25, at Circuit, 3641 N. Halsted. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the show begins at 8. Tickets, which include hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. They're available at Hearty Boys (3404 N. Halsted), at Circuit, or over the phone at 773-244-9866.
