In two months Universal will release El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco ("The Object Previously Known as an Album"), the first new recording since 2007 from Cafe Tacuba, arguably Mexico's greatest rock band of all time. Over the course of the previous ten years, the Mexico City four-piece has reined in its experimental impulses to arrive at a relatively conventional rock-pop sound, complete with a live drummer (for most of its career, which began in 1989, the group has used a drum machine). Cafe Tacuba's songs are still packed with big hooks, though, and they remain one of the planet's most exciting live acts. The new record is a return to their roots, in a sense (the programmed drums are back), but judging from the lead single, "De Este Lado del Camino," the band hasn't radically changed its overall sound; singer Ruben Albarran croons a forlorn melody over atmospheric guitar, coloristic retro synth, and driving percussion. This show, part of a short North American tour, ought to draw heavily from the forthcoming album. —Peter Margasak Malafacha, Nahuales Underground, DJ Resistol 5000, Rude Gentlemen (DJ set), and DJ Enrique Tobias open.
