A forgotten effort by cult director James Whale (Frankenstein, The Old Dark House), with Paul Lukas as a butler who passes for his employer. Sophisticated comedy, not horror, was probably Whale's real forte—as witness the asides in The Invisible Man and Bride of Frankenstein—but his work in the lighter genre is seldom revived, which makes this 1934 rarity worth investigating. With Elissa Landi, Dorothy Revier, and Nils Asther. 70 min.
