Burning Question

To the editor:

How is it that Peter Margasak singled out Chicago's Fire Show as one of the best shows of this year's South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas (Post No Bills, 3/23), yet couldn't see his way clear to recommending their show this week at Schubas?

Over a thousand bands from all over the globe play at SXSW. And according to Margasak, the Fire Show distinguished themselves with an "angular and punishing" set. But this Friday (3/30), in Chicago, the Reader's critics recommend the Soft Boys and the Minders (who, incidentally, also played at SXSW yet received no accolades from Margasak).

How can the Fire Show be better than a thousand bands one week, but not worth recommending the next?

Curiously,

Bradford Larrabee

Portland, Oregon
