Amazing Sammo's production of Tracy Letts's 1996 play is dark, mesmerizing, and surprisingly funny. It takes place entirely in the dingy Oklahoma hotel room where middle-aged cocaine addict Agnes (Jill Matel) lives; when she befriends an ex-Army man named Peter (Sam Naishtat), he moves in with her and shortly thereafter, their bug problem begins. Peter is quite possibly a delusional paranoid schizophrenic, and the insects that the two of them see may or may not really exist—but it's never entirely clear, and therein lies the tension. It makes for a riveting and sometimes terrifying show, and Matel's performance is so engaging that I even managed look past the fact that she was playing a 44-year-old woman but appeared to be about 20 years younger than that. —Julia Thiel
