Re: “Today's lesson: charters do not outperform unionized schools

"You can't determine anything about which schools are 'outperforming' merely by looking at overall test scores. Shankerblog has a lot of excellent posts on that point..."

And you can't determine much of anything with value added models like that guy suggests, either: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer…

Re: “Today's lesson: charters do not outperform unionized schools

"It's ironic that you're using ISAT scores to say that unions are better than charters, when one of the union's chief complaints is that they don't want to be evaluated just by test scores."

It's ironic that you're calling this ironic when his original point was that it's ironic that the public schools are doing better than the charters based on the test scores favored by charter advocates when they're working to shut down public schools.

In any case, I'm looking at the ISAC data from http://www.cps.edu/SchoolData/Pages/School… (Reports including English Language Learners, Students by Performance Levels, filter by year, sort by Meet/Exceed->Composite) and I can't reproduce Ben's numbers, so I'm utterly unclear as to what data he's looking at.
