Brideshead Revisited

Julian Jarrold's adaptation of the Evelyn Waugh novel isn't entirely faithful, but it conveys the book's universal themes of moral responsibility, trust and betrayal, and the aspirations and failings of human relationships. Set mostly in England during the 1920s and '30s, it focuses on the emotional triangle of a young Oxford student (Matthew Goode), his gay aristocrat classmate (Ben Whishaw), and the classmate's lovely sister (Hayley Atwell). The fine cast includes Emma Thompson as the siblings' gracious but domineering mother, and the location footage of the family's majestic mansion is stunning. With Michael Gambon. R, 133 min.
