Rated R · 130 minutes · 2008

Smug and unconvincing, this 2008 period drama from the Netherlands is the sort of movie that defines an era solely by its prejudices, on the implicit assumption that we'll applaud the central characters for their modern attitudes. The story involves Dutch women who've immigrated to New Zealand in the 1950s for arranged marriages, but this promising set-up soon devolves into a trio of stale melodramatic situations (a housewife learns that she can't conceive children, an innocent finds herself wedded to a brutal fundamentalist, an independent woman wrestles with her shameful past). Apart from a lengthy, graphic sex scene, there isn't much here to make the material seem new; the handsome landscape shots register like gift wrap on an empty box. Ben Sombogaart directed. In English and subtitled Dutch.
