What if Moby-Dick, Herman Melville's testosterone-soaked, Aspergerian examination of masculinity, were about women instead? That is the question at the heart of Egan Reich's odd new play. (Just consider the title.) After learning that their whaler husbands have died at sea, five women discover a beached sperm-whale cow. With generous pauses for emotional soliloquies and much airing of grudges, Reich's treadmill plot consists of their incompetent, ultimately disastrous quest to extract the whale's valuable blubber. Though thoroughly conceived and thoughtfully portrayed by director Krissy Vanderwarker's cast, the characters are all unlikeable in their separate ways. The haunting timber-and-lace set by Courtney O'Neill is one of this troubled show's few unqualified successes. —Keith Griffith
