Two for Brazil--the duo of Brazilian-born guitarist and singer Paulinho Garcia and homegrown reedist Greg Fishman--have released four inventive albums in less than three years. Accordingly they've drawn good crowds on tours in Europe and Asia--but they've still gotten relatively little recognition here at home. In that sense they're representative of Chicago's entire Brazilian music community, a small but vibrant group of transplanted players operating at a consistently high level but flying just under most listeners' radar. This concert goes for the quick fix, bringing most of that community together on one stage for one night. The intended highlight of the evening is a reunion of Made in Brasil, which throughout the 80s provided local listeners with polished and virtuosic bossa nova as well as some of the music that had supplanted that style in the 60s and 70s (known as musica popular brasileira, or MPB). Led by pianist Breno Sauer and his vocalist wife, Neusa, Made in Brasil also featured Garcia on bass; sparkly percussionist Geraldo de Oliveira and drummer Luiz Ewerling round out the band for this rare appearance. Also on the bill are Two for Brazil and Brasil, Brazil, a piano trio led by percussionist Dede Sampaio. But the set that promises to be most intriguing is the first-ever meeting between two splendid and technically gifted guitarists--Brazilian Sergio Pires and masterful local jazzman Bobby Broom, who spends most of his time exploring decidedly non-Brazilian music in his own band and in the organ trio Deep Blue. Sunday, June 1, 7 PM, Berry Memorial United Methodist Church, 4754 N. Leavitt; 773-275-9735.
