Brassed Off

A schmaltzy but sweet story (1996) about Yorkshire miners whose ambivalence toward their little brass band turns to commitment as they face unemployment. Tara Fitzgerald is a surveyor who conceals her role in a labor-management dispute so she can play in the band with Ewan McGregor, their subplot just nuanced enough to deepen the main story. And Pete Postlethwaite is moving as the bandleader, whose dream of taking his players to compete at the Albert Hall nearly eclipses his appreciation of the dire issues they face. The music's great, but frequent tight shots of actors ostensibly blowing their horns look phony enough to be distracting. Written and directed by Mark Herman. R, 109 min.
