This exquisitely crafted 1996 fairy tale, in which a man finds out there's more to life than banality, is a treasure. John Turturro stars as the foreman on an engineering job that's abruptly canceled just before a holiday weekend. Feeling empty and rejected by his subordinates, he decides to search for a water park that was the site of cherished childhood memories. On the way home from a disappointing discovery there, he's sidetracked into a life-changing adventure when he stops to help a strangely innocent and hyperreal young man with car trouble. Writer-director Tom DiCillo explores stylistic and emotional terrain that's the lighter side of David Lynch's universe, creating an exceptionally moving buddy movie about a man and his anima.
