When: Wed., Feb. 18, 9:30 p.m. 2009
Price: $6
Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist Boris Hauf has been a de facto member of Chicago’s music community for years, maintaining relationships with players here (he makes frequent lengthy visits) and in 2007 initiating the annual Chicago Sound Map project, which convenes local performers and composers to realize pieces that explore the commonalities and tensions between composition and improvisation. This concert, one of several he’ll play in advance of 2009’s Sound Map events, is an experiment in interpersonal chemistry. Hauf, who’ll be playing saxophone, selected guitarist Toby Summerfield and drummers Frank Rosaly, Michael Hartman, and Stephen Hess (any one of whom might also use electronics) because he wanted to hear what new sounds might arise from the collision of their peculiar techniques and varied backgrounds, which range from placid ambience and real-time electronic collage to twisted rock and blistering free jazz. Bassist Nate McBride opens with a solo set and Bob Weston spins. —Bill Meyer
