Boom Town

One of Jack Conway's enjoyable Clark Gable brawlers (1940). Conway's vigorous, sloppy direction gives a real lift to the myths of American entrepreneurship embodied in John Lee Mahin's screenplay, though there's also some soggy melodrama involving Gable's rivalry with ex-buddy Spencer Tracy. With Claudette Colbert and Hedy Lamarr, both of whom seem wildly miscast in this wildcatting tale—but that's the MGM way. 118 min.
