It's no easy task to make a posthardcore song packed with calculated structures sound like out-and-out chaos. During the early-aughts screamo explosion, five-inch record upon five-inch record bristled with machine-gun blastbeats, painfully distorted screams, and screeching guitar clatter—it sounded like everybody wanted to outdo everybody else in volatility (and some of them might have managed it, if they'd outlasted the ten-month band lifespan built into the scene). Comparing Spanyurd to the bulk of those old-school screamo shitshows would be unfair—the local quartet's songs are heavier, mathier, and, well, longer—but they definitely have a talent for writhing in their own apocalyptic noise, much like Daughters did on 2003's Canada Songs. On the band's EP PCeP (self-released in November and available free on their Bandcamp page), standout tracks "Man O Whore" and "Queen Job" sling spark-throwing breakdowns and disjointed rhythms in such messy profusion that it's impossible to keep track of any sort of structure—which is probably just the way these guys prefer it. Guitarist Ethan Hughes and drummer Thomas Bradach hold it all together, but only just barely, and their frenetic chemistry gets more and more tense with each freak-out. —Kevin Warwick Bongripper headlines; Lovely Little Girls (see Three Beats), Unmanned Ship, Spanyurd, and Machismo open.
