Re: “Chicago Without Coal

Many of us in our 70s remember as kids shoveling coal into the furnace at home, cleaning the ashes, and our parents hanging clothes on the clotheslines only on days when the wind would not blow cinders onto clean clothes from passing trains. Between that, cigarette smoke everywhere, and playing with x-ray machines in the shoe stores, it's amazing that any of us lived beyond 20.

Re: “How to Fix the El

When the "Skip-stop" system was in use, I remember wondering how they picked the stations. A station where the train ran through at speed without slowing down made sense, but having BELMONT an "A" station made no sense since the trains often were stopped for switching Ravenswood trains without opening the doors. Also skipping Irving Park at the double curves also didn't seem to matter since the trains had go so slow at that location.

Although Hegewisch and the east side are part of Chicago, we never see a Reader.

Re: “Clout on the Calumet River

Windjammers is one of the few reasonbly priced marinas left in the Chicago area. The article failed to mention that the wood out in back is for the the fireplace in the bar, one of the biggest in the area. It makes "Jammeres" a cozy winter hangout, unlike the "corporate" marinas trying to bring the north side to the river.
