Inspired by Love Story and clearly pitched at India's youth market, this 1973 melodrama by Raj Kapoor concerns two teenagers, a millionaire's boy (gawky and charming Rishi Kapoor, son of the director) and a fisherman's daughter (buxom Dimple Kapadia), whose fathers try to put the brakes on their romance. The script, by Kapoor's left-leaning collaborators V.P. Sathe and Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, touches on parental neglect and the caste system, but Kapoor seems more interested in Bollywood glitz, exotic locales, and romantic nostalgia (he even recycles a tune from his 1949 film Rain). This is little more than an escapist fantasy punctuated by lavish musical numbers, though some of them (especially a welcoming ceremony in the fishing village) are so elaborate and outrageous that they're a breath of fresh air. 168 min.
