Bluebeard's Eighth Wife

Ernst Lubitsch seems to be resting on his cliches in this atypically inelegant 1938 comedy. The script, by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett, sets up a sadly miscast Gary Cooper as an American millionaire who has gone through seven wives and is determined to make Claudette Colbert his eighth. The wit is there, but Lubitsch's handling of the moral issues is uncertain and strangely sentimental.
