This is such a great idea it’s hard to believe this is the first group I’ve seen try it—but I guess it does take a pretty extraordinary amount of organization and enthusiasm to put together a choir of 20 or 30 people even once, much less turn it into an ongoing project. THE BLUE RIBBON GLEE CLUB is a largely a cappella ensemble, its membership drawn mostly from local indie bands, and its repertoire consists of high-school glee-club nonstandards like the Clash’s “Spanish Bombs,” the Dead Kennedys’ “California Uber Alles,” and Sleater-Kinney’s “Words and Guitar,” accompanied by no more than drums, tambourines, or maybe a bass guitar—usually there’s a healthy contingent singing the main riff instead of the words. The performances are enthusiastically, charmingly amateur, and the overall effect is akin to having a troop of carolers show up at your door singing songs you actually like. —Monica Kendrick
