This all-star band was assembled by pianist Bill Charlap to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records. For the Blue Note 7’s recent Mosaic (Blue Note), the group’s members—Charlap, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, reedist Steve Wilson, tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Lewis Nash—have written new arrangements for classic tunes from the label’s massive and influential catalog. The album offers just a taste of the repertoire they’ll be drawing on throughout their extensive U.S. tour, and it was cut before they hit the road—the session is solid but not revelatory, so I’m hoping that two and half months of gigging will have forged them into a more fiery and interactive combo in time for this Chicago date. —Peter Margasak
