No previous knowledge of or interest in martial arts is necessary to enjoy Bloodsport! The Musical, a comedy based on the 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme film about the Kumite, an international underground fighting competition. Each fighter fulfills his country’s stereotypes, which provides much of the entertainment. United States is fully bearded and tries to convince a reluctant France to "come on and drink a few thousand beers." Canada apologizes for doing damage to his opponent. Vietnam is an accidental killing machine. The minimal singing is humorous as are the jabs at Chicagoans. A romantic side story between France and a foxy blond reporter never felt truly necessary to the production but provided an extra asset to the plot and another golden opportunity for comedy.—Chelsea Hohn
