Bloodiest, Czar, Pink Avalanche

When: Sat., Feb. 1, 8 p.m. 2014
Part of the Epitonic Deep Freeze Festival.

Bloodiest's arrangements are complex and carefully paced, and considering the music's wide emotional range and sometimes gargantuan volume, the band's live performances are surprisingly low-key. Lamont, who's been known to spit fake blood in Yakuza and swings hair with the best of 'em as Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin 2, usually sings sitting down so he can work the knobs on his effects pedals. —Miles Raymer, 2010

Last month Chicago metal trio Czar self-released their second LP, No One Is Alone If No One Is Alive, and they've retained their despotic mastery of sludgy doom, gloomy industrial, and driving death metal (with a healthy dose of stomping 90s alt-rock). Throw in the heaviest Beatles cover since Vanilla Fudge—a thermonuclear "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"—and you've got one of the year's best local metal albums. —Gossip Wolf, 2013
