It takes chutzpah to ape My Bloody Valentine’s massive, smeary guitar sound and make it feel cute, but that’s what Blonde Redhead do on “No More Honey,” a song from their new Barragán (Kobalt). Of course, lead guitarist Amedeo Pace doesn’t use that sound to whip up an all-encompassing barrage a la Kevin Shields—he mostly confines his six-string swells to the refrain, and often drops out entirely. Unfortunately, “No More Honey” is one of just a few songs on Barragán that create any emotional tension, with Kazu Makino’s almost childlike coo sounding especially vulnerable in the face of that controlled maelstrom. By and large the album is temperate and sweet—the beats are gentle, the melodies sugary, the tones synthetic, and the guitars usually subdued. It’s not unlistenable, but it sure feels underdone, as though an early version were accidentally sent to the pressing plant. Here’s hoping the band brings a more fleshed-out sound for its live show. —Peter Margasak
