This 1985 black comedy from Australia strives for a jaunty, irreverent, surrealist tone, yet director Ray Lawrence—who made his reputation in TV commercials—can't find the stylistic means to pull it off. His visuals—burnished, overcomposed, and distorted for comic effect—crush any sense of freedom in the flow of incidents, and even the most inventive moments end up seeming ponderous and swollen. It's as if Ridley Scott had decided to direct a farce; the cold, painterly images suffocate the laughs. Barry Otto stars as a successful businessman who finds his life going to hell, literally. R, 102 min.
