On the new Ride Your Heart (Dead Oceans), Jennifer and Jessie Clavin play a brand of lo-fi garage pop that’s very easy to compare to Best Coast. The melodies have that sun-drenched, SoCal girl-group luster—occasionally reminiscent of the Go-Go’s cool—and certain swashes of reverb evoke a hazy Sunday afternoon picnicking on the beach. The problem with those comparisons is that the sisters Clavin, currently known as Bleached, are longtime veterans of the SoCal scene—they played in jagged, quirky garage band Mika Miko, they’ve been regular faces at the Smell in LA, and Bethany Cosentino was but a wee pup when Jennifer and Jessie started getting their hands dirty as teenagers. Bleached’s debut full-length uses a good bit of the sound popularized by Best Coast, but it has a mature, soulful darkness too—the melodies are spooky, sometimes noisy, and the lyrics are often angry or heartbroken (maybe best heard on the back-to-back “Outta My Mind” and “Dead in Your Head”). Pretty garage pop with some guff and substance—more like this, please. —Kevin Warwick Ex Cops, Hunters, and Vamos open.
