Re: “What to wear for the NATO summit

For one thing, Occupy protesters are not out to target well dressed people working in downtown. For another, protesters don't talk about 'the Man' anymore. They also don't all go around in Birkenstocks, cargo pants, and dreadlocks. Apparently someone hasn't been to a protest since the 1960s. Beyond the worn out stereotypes though, calling the protesters the unwashed masses is also insulting. In the 1960s people went and got jobs when they became bored or disillusioned with the hippie lifestyle. Now people are in the streets because they have jobs that don't pay for their basic living expenses, or they can't find a job at all. They're in the streets because they feel disenfranchised by an unprecedented degree of corporate influence in politics. And they are in the streets because they see unacceptable levels of income inequality that come directly at the expense of their own well-being. Even if people did look a little worse for the wear, it probably has more to do with their economic status than a rebellious protester aesthetic, and taking shots at that is just cheap.
