John Zorn

John Zorn

When: Sat., May 3, 7 & 10 p.m. 2014
Price: $60, $100-$125 for VIP
For this supertrio to get your attention, it doesn’t need to do much more than introduce its members: avant-garde saxophone demigod John Zorn, alchemical bassist and producer Bill Laswell, and founding Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. Which is lucky for them, since Bladerunner is something of a fly-by-night outfit—it tends to lay waste to a city or two with isolated gigs, then disappear off the radar again. Though it’s been conducting those surgical strikes intermittently since 2000, tonight’s two shows are the band’s local premiere—and its only midwest dates for the foreseeable future. Since Bladerunner has never made a record, there’s little official documentation of its capabilities. (In January, when the band announced Chicago and New York shows, Brooklyn Vegan linked to a seven-year-old live clip.) Its set at the Adelaide Festival in March was reportedly 35 minutes of improvised frenzy, fueled by Lombardo’s pummeling machine-gun power. Bladerunner harkens back a bit to Zorn’s Naked City days, as well as to Painkiller, the early-90s trio where he played with Laswell and former Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris—and the saxophonist’s ability to bend fire with sound has continued to grow since then. —Monica Kendrick Early show all-ages, late show 17+.
