Kevin Costner stars as a wealthy LA lawyer raising a mixed-race granddaughter; when his wife dies, the girl's paternal grandparents in South Central, whom Costner has long avoided, sue for custody. There follow a good many conversations about race in America; some of them are thought-provoking but many feel soft-pedaled. Writer-director Mike Binder (The Upside of Anger) strains to render everyone sympathetic by creating obvious parallels between the black and white characters (both Costner and the little girl's father have addiction problems), and his attempts at comic relief feel even more forced. This is undeniably well-intentioned, though, and the players are sensitive and sincere. With Octavia Spencer, Anthony Mackie, Jennifer Ehle, and Bill Burr.
