Black Moth Super Rainbow, School of Seven Bells, Follows

When: Wed., May 20, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $15, $12 in advance
Black Moth Super Rainbow’s recently leaked fourth album, Eating Us (due May 26 on Graveface), is pretty progressive for a nouvelle-hippie jamboree. It’s easy to ignore the addled woodsy-beardo stage names (“Father Hummingbird” is not something I can abide), and the positive-earth-vibes lyrics are processed with old-school vocoder till they’re nearly impossible to understand, pixelated into a shimmery dust that hangs above the rippling synths, hazy samples, and feel-good ambience. Dave Fridmann produced this one, and it sounds bigger, cleaner, and weirder than anything the band’s done so far—BYO laser light show. School of Seven Bells and Follows (a new Chicago-based group fronted by Mia Clarke of Electrelane) open. —Jessica Hopper
