The most engaging of the four videos that make up this opening-night program is Christine Turner's Soles (2005), about a young boy wooing a girl who sells his prized record collection to buy fancy sneakers. Antonia March and Jacquelyn McKinley's Oxtails (2005) and Layla Mashavu's Inspired By . . . (2005) are romance dramas so well made as to risk blandness. The concluding and longest piece, Evan Allen-Gessesse's Standing on Common Ground, interjects a needed dose of actuality—he volunteers in New Orleans over spring break. Technically it's a bit rough edged, but the images of a devastated city and residents' stories of police looting are chilling. 85 min.
