As Black Eagle Child, Milwaukee multi-instrumentalist Michael Jantz builds delicate, incandescent experimental tracks by layering looped guitars. On his most recent proper full-length, last year’s Go Around, Again (Under the Spire), some are clean and ethereal while others are serrated and dosed with reverb; to their staggered cycling he adds bits of rustic hand drumming, dreamy banjo, twinkling xylophone, and what sounds like a moody melodica. The album’s high point is trancey 16-minute opener “Sun Cylinder,” whose interlocking, sun-bleached guitars and uplifting interstellar synths make it sound like music for a yoga session in low earth orbit. Jantz’s follow-up, a self-released download of impromptu recordings called Family Jam, is more playful—on “Jam #1” he uses a sauntering guitar line and wordless vocals that could almost pass for a didgeridoo, and the result is something I could imagine an Australian teacher playing to settle preschoolers down at naptime. —Leor Galil Jason Soliday opens.
