King Vidor's 1930 version of the Billy the Kid myth has the naive lyricism of pure folk tale. Johnny Mack Brown is an appropriately otherworldly hero, Wallace Beery is his old gruff self as Pat Garrett. Originally photographed in a prototypical 65-millimeter wide-screen process, Billy the Kid contains several startling pre-Welles experiments with deep focus.
