Bohemian Theatre Ensemble's bumptious, tender revival of this 1985 Broadway musical is strikingly successful in preserving both the sweet soul and stinging satire of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. William Hauptman's script distills the 1884 novel's essence, and Roger Miller's infectious country-gospel tunes evoke the unique nature of antebellum southern life, in which blacks and whites shared a common culture despite their cruel social divide. Under Peter Marston Sullivan's skillful direction, Andrew Mueller and Brian-Alwyn Newland establish a rapport that intensifies Twain's tale of a white orphan and a runaway slave rafting down the Mississippi. And the down-home feel of Miller's songs is enhanced by the fact that the cast members accompany themselves on guitar, banjo, fiddle, and washboard. --Albert Williams
