In 1992, monologuist and chanteuse Paula Killen brought together a crew of female solo performers at Club Lower Links for a heady, scrappy showcase dubbed Big Goddess Pow Wow. The following year, Metro offered one of the goddesses, Poetry Slam champ Lisa Buscani, the opportunity to open for bands. "I told them I had a better idea," she says. "'How about a full evening of female spoken word?'" And poof, the Pow Wow became one of the biggest draws on the Chicago fringe, regularly packing the Metro until Buscani and Killen, the event's driving forces, moved to opposite coasts. Now, in celebration of the Rhinoceros Theater Festival's 20th anniversary, the goddesses return for one night, reuniting Buscani and Killen with other stars of the performance scene's heyday: Marcia Wilkie, Cheryl Trykv, Cin Salach, and Jenny Magnus. Singers C.C. Carter and Naomi Ashley also perform; the evening is hosted by Susan Messing, one of the sharpest improvisers in Chicago. --Justin Hayford
