Ever since R&B crooner Frank Ocean came out in July, a slew of trend pieces have hit the Web highlighting today's great gay rappers—an unusual angle, considering Ocean isn't an MC. But it's helped introduce some great musicians who might have flown under the radar—including Le1f, Mykki Blanco, and Chicago's Big Dipper. Though Details magazine recently called Big Dipper one of "hip-hop's queer pioneers," he's only been writing and recording since April 2011 and starting performing about a year ago. (His debut EP, They Ain't Ready, should arrive early next year.) He's earned the small fame he enjoys with the ludicrous videos for "Drip Drop" and "Summertime Realness," which match the songs' silly, raunchy rhymes ("You in the corner, doe eyes like Bambi / You can call me Thumper, let's start with a handy") and hyperaccessible electronic beats (produced by Baathhaus's Dan Foley) with funny, smartly edited, and sometimes NSFW visuals. The dude is a smart pop artist—his videos have broad crossover appeal, and his music is strong enough to survive without a YouTube URL. On "Meat Quotient," for instance, ascending-and-descending synths, stuttering drum patterns, and flashes of industrial-style samples dovetail with Big Dipper's brash flow and braggadocious lyrics—you've never heard a bear rap so many synonyms for "dick." —Leor Galil Big Dipper headlines tonight's show, entitled "You're Gonna Die: A Holiday Fantasia"; Baathhaus, Grades, Shea Coulee, the Fly Honeys, Jyldo, Deja K. Taylor, Lady/Watch featuring Dav Yendler, and DJ LA Jesus open. Swaguerrilla spins.
