Biography, Documentary
This fast-paced and intelligent documentary opens with the 2007 assassination of Benazir Bhutto, two-time prime minister of Pakistan and the first woman leader of any Muslim state, then jumps back to the 1947 origins of the world's sixth largest nation to uncover the roots of her improbable and dramatic rise to power. Codirectors Duane Baughman and Johnny O'Hara eulogize Bhutto as a potential savior of Muslim liberal democracy, but their admiration for their gorgeous and charismatic subject doesn't prevent them from rattling some ugly skeletons in her family's closet, including plausible allegations of clan-wide corruption and of Benazir's involvement in the assassination of her brother and political rival, Murtaza. Those charges are left hanging, but the film builds a surer case against U.S. foreign policy as a primary obstacle to Bhutto's best political impulses.
Cast: Benazir Bhutto, René de la Cruz, Condoleezza Rice, Sanam Bhutto, Rachael Farrokh and Pervez Musharraf
