Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain

102 minutes · 2014

Docudrama, Drama, Historical Drama
This docudrama chronicles the events leading up to the infamous 1984 chemical explosion at a Union Carbide factory in central India, which killed tens of thousands of people and left even more disabled for life. Ravi Kumar, directing a script he wrote with David Brooks (no relation to the pundit), juggles stories of factory workers, an idealistic journalist trying to expose unsafe conditions (Kal Penn), and Union Carbide executive Warren Anderson (Martin Sheen). The tone sways uneasily between cynicism and sentimentality, and much of the drama is overstated. But this is informative, heartfelt, and interesting for its Brechtian portrayal of Anderson as a man so good at lying to his workers that he almost convinces himself. In English and subtitled Hindi.
