Beyond the Call

Adrian Belic (Genghis Blues) profiles a band of gung-ho American philanthropists—army veteran Ed Artis, cardiologist Jim Laws, and solar-power engineer Walt Ratterman—who organize their own humanitarian missions in such dire locales as Afghanistan, Cambodia, Thailand, and the southern Philippines. The documentary rightly commends them for their social conscience but skirts the issues of why international aid falls short in these places and whether the trio's benign vigilantism causes more problems than it solves. Artis explains that one of their requirements when choosing a mission is the potential for “high adventure,” which must make the do-gooders a gigantic headache for the State Department. 81 min.
