Best Place to Buy a Thoughtful, Inexpensive Gift

814 N. Ashland

I’m not too modest to admit that, for a guy, I have a stellar reputation for picking jewelry. But I can’t take sole credit. I can’t stand in a big department store, head buzzing from the ambient perfume, and look through hundreds of variations on 24-karat gold for something that won’t make me look foolish. I require a small store that know I can walk into, look through a small selection of well-curated wares, and find something worthwhile and within my limited budget. Which is why my store of first and/or last resort is RR#1. If I need something small, cheap, and thoughtful, I can count on them—for instance, a charming pair of earrings that amount to little more than gold wire and a web of pink and purple thread, priced at less than $15.

Odds are that something here will make someone you know happy. There’s a wide—but not too wide—selection of boutique soaps and other powder-room whatnots; all sorts of cocktail, food, and tea accoutrements; colorful flasks and bottles; candles, frames, and other little homey items; and a great collection of gewgaws like music boxes, keychains hung with knit figurines, cardboard minispeakers, or Japanese gardening gloves imprinted with a ruler. Once you’ve made your selection, there’s also a well-curated selection of cards to accompany your gift.
