None of the shorts on this program suggests a major talent at work, but there are enough pleasant moments to make it a satisfying diversion. Pjotr Sapegin's The Last Norwegian Troll, a stop-motion animation from Norway, updates Jay Ward's beloved "Fractured Fairy Tales" cartoons, with Max von Sydow (an inspired choice) narrating and providing the voice of the title character. From Quebec, the creepy black-and-white mood piece Blanche Fraise was also created with stop-motion photography, purportedly without a script, by animator Frédérick Tremblay. The remaining shorts range from abstract collages to pencil-drawn slapstick.
