Best New Presenter

Chicago Cinema Society

Committed to overlooked genre cinema from other countries, this local collective debuted with a bang last December by presenting the Chicago premiere of The Last Circus (2010), a singular mix of political satire and Grand Guignol by Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia (El Crimen Perfecto). The grand event at the Portage Theater included not only the Iglesia film but a vocal recital of Spanish popular songs, a rare 35-millimeter screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre (1989), and a Vegas-style dance show. The CCS has recently begun programming midnight movies at the Logan Theatre (see Best Old Movie Theater Made New), offering a diverse selection that's ranged from Battle Royale (a Japanese cult favorite that presaged The Hunger Games) to Sound of Noise, a cartoonish crime musical from Sweden.
